Autoresponders
Friday, November 13, 2009 1:53An autoresponder is a computer program that automatically responds to e-mail sent to it. They can be very simple or quite complex. Autoresponders are often used as e-mail marketing tools, to immediately provide information to their prospective customers and then follow-up with them at preset time intervals. While a Squeeze page is the sales tool to capture the visitor’s email address, the autoresponder is the program that manages your e-mail list and delivers follow-up information. The autoresponder may be utilized to send a series of follow-up emails or to provide an immediate download link to get information.
There are 3 different categories of autoresponders. First are the free autoresponders that I would not even consider using. They have terrible deliverability rate and are often marked as spam and are usually full of advertisements. If you are going to take the time to carefully craft your advertisements, you want to make sure your customer receives your e-mail and you do don’t want your e-mails cluttered with other people’s advertisements that can distract or turn off your customers. It is not worth the free service.
The next thing to consider is whether you want to purchase an autoresponder program that is either installed on your own server or own your own computer or pay for an autoresponder service that is hosted by a third party on their server. Of course, there are pros and cons to both approaches. When you purchase an autoresponder program it is usually at a lower, one-time cost, but the bulk of the technical handling of the software will be left up to you. You have to install the software on your own servers and your email is sent from your own servers. Some web hosts will not appreciate you sending bulk email. This kind of autoresponder gives you total control but also can give you a ton of headaches. You have to play administrator and deal with bounces, spam complaints, etc. and If you are not careful you can get banned by your ISP. What you need to consider is whether you have the time and knowledge involved in operating and maintaining your own software. If you’re not too computer savvy then the hosted option is probably the best way to go.
The hosted or remote software service will likely involve a monthly subscription for the service, but will have a high level of features and technical support. No installation on your server is required and e-mails are sent from the host server not your server. You create an account with the autoresponder company online and all management is conducted on your browser. The company will provide you with the step-by-step details on how to create the submission forms, they will capture, store and manage all of the client submissions, and they will send, test and manage all autoresponder and broadcast messages.
No matter what you chose, an autoresponder service is a MUST and one of the best (and most affordable) online tools you will invest in.
